Character Dance
Character Dance is a style of ballet deriving inspiration from national or folk dances, or interpreting and representing a particular profession, mode of living, or personality. The movements used in Character Dance tend to be less stylized than in classical ballet, allowing greater individual expression and diversity.
Character Dance is integral to classical ballet repertoire and vital to classical ballet training.
Examples of Character Dance in action include variations from classical ballets such as: "The Nutcracker", "Coppelia", "Don Quixote", "La Sylphide" and "Swan Lake".
Character class is formatted in the same way as a classical ballet class with exercises at the barre and in the center, as it requires a certain level of technique just like classical ballet.
In Character Dance, participants learn a variety of different musical rhythms and syncopations. Character class also develops flexibility and strength of the body and back, along with improving stamina and teaching the correct use of the torso while dancing.
Participants require character dance shoes, and female students additionaly require a skirt.
